The Case Against Big Tobacco

Last year, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas filed a lawsuit against Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and other big tobacco representatives. The charges included breach of contract, committing fraud against the citizens of New Mexico, conspiracy, and others. The Attorney General’s complaint claimed that the tobacco companies withheld a certain amount of their due payments to the state of New Mexico, which put them in breach of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA).

Attorney General Balderas didn’t mince words on the matter. In a statement, he said, “it is time to force the tobacco companies to pay New Mexico what they owe for damages–funding much-needed health initiatives.”
